What a mobile detail at your home needs from you

Getting your car detailed at home sounds like the easy version of detailing, and it can be. Nobody has to drive across town, wait in a lobby or arrange a ride. A mobile unit arrives, the team sets up in your garage or parking stall, and the car is done where it sits. But a good mobile detail still goes better when you have thought through a few things first.

Platinum Plus Detailing runs a mobile detailing unit out of its Costa Mesa shop. The team describes it as turning your home garage or parking stall into an all-inclusive auto detailing shop on the spot. Here is what that means for you as the owner and how to get the most from the visit.

What a mobile detail includes

Both of the shop's full detail packages are available mobile, at the same price as having them done in the shop. The Platinum Deluxe Detail Package starts at $350. It covers vacuuming the floors and trunk, wiping the mats, cleaning cloth seats, wiping leather, cleaning the console, cup holders and vents, treating the dash with a UV protectant, cleaning door panels, pockets and jambs, doing the glass inside and out, and cleaning the headliner. It also includes a shampoo of the cloth mats, carpet and seats, a protective treatment on leather and vinyl, a hand wash of the wheels and tires, paint decontamination with a clay bar, tire dressing and a paint sealant, along with an entry-level ceramic upgrade.

The Platinum Custom Detail Package starts at $450. It includes everything in the Deluxe package, then adds deep cleaning and conditioning of leather seats, trim dressing, a single-stage paint polish, protectant on the exterior trim, and steam extraction of the carpets and cloth seats. Mobile detailing does not cost any more or less than having the same work done in the shop. For anything beyond these two packages, ask whether the job can be done at your place or needs the shop bays.

Check the service area first

The mobile unit works within an 8-mile service area of the Costa Mesa shop. The shop's own advice is to call and find out if your home location falls inside it. Distance is not the only variable, so a quick call settles it faster than a guess from a map. If you would rather leave the car with the team, free pick-up and drop-off is available within the same 8-mile radius of the shop.

Space, water and power: just ask

Detailing needs room to work. The team has to open every door, reach the trunk and move around the car with equipment. A one-car garage with the car pulled forward often works, and so does a clear parking stall. What the setup needs in terms of water access and power varies from job to job, so the right move is to ask us. Tell the team what you have at home, whether that is a garage with an outlet, a carport or an apartment stall, and they will tell you what the visit requires.

Shade and a flat spot help too. Working in a shaded area keeps products from drying too fast on hot panels and keeps the crew comfortable. If the only option is open sun, mention it when you book.

How to prepare the car

  • Take out trash, loose papers and personal items from the cabin and trunk.
  • Remove child seats if you can, or tell the team they are there.
  • Point out stains, pet hair or odors so the team knows where to focus.
  • Make sure the team can reach the car, and leave a way to open it.
  • Tell the team about any damage or loose trim you already know about.

None of this is a big job. Clearing the car does two things. It saves time that would otherwise be spent moving your things, and it protects the items themselves. The team treats the car carefully, but a laptop bag in the footwell is better off in your house.

Choosing a package and what to expect

Deluxe is the right call for a car that is in decent shape and needs a thorough reset: interior cleaned top to bottom, exterior washed, decontaminated and sealed. Custom suits a car with leather that needs conditioning, carpets that need steam extraction, or paint that could use a polish. If you are unsure which fits, describe the car on the phone and the team will point you to the package that makes sense.

If you are thinking about longer-term protection, a detail is also a good starting point. Both packages include a paint sealant, and the shop offers an entry-level ceramic upgrade as part of the work. You can look at coating levels later without committing to them now.

The team arrives, sets up and works through the car in order. You do not need to stand over it. When it is done, walk around the car with the team, point out anything you want a second look at, and settle the bill.
